mudras

Those familiar with reflexology know that by stimulating certain pressure points in your eyes, ears, tongue, hands and feet, it is possible to revitalize and balance energy in different parts of your body; including your organs and glands.

Hand mudras work in a very similar fashion. The word “mudra” translates to seal or gesture. A hand mudra is both a symbolic and therapeutic gesture mainly performed with the fingers. By positioning our fingers in various postures, we can influence how energy is channeled inside of us.

The great Buddha knew the use of mudrāsand is often depicted using these ritual gestures. Various Kung Fu forms contain positions identical to these mudrās.108 mudras are used in regular Tantric rituals. Mudras are also used in Indian Classical Dance. There are over 200 mudras in bharatanatyam and over 250 in mohiniattam.

Mudras relationship with the elements
The physical body is made up of five elements namely – Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Aakash (ether – the tiny intercellular spaces in the human body).

Imbalance of these elements disrupts the immunity system and causes disease.

Deficiencies in any of these elements can be made up by connecting one part of the body with another in a particular manner through Mudras.

When a finger representing an element is brought into contact with the thumb, that element is brought into balance. Therefore the disease caused by the imbalance is cured. Mudras start electromagnetic currents within the body which balance various constituting elements and restore health. The joining of fingers creates an effect on the human body.

Five Fingers for Five Elements:

* Thumb Fire
* Index Air
* Middle Aakash
* Ring Earth
* Little Water

There is a direct relationship between the hands and the neck since the nerve paths run through the vertebral form in the arms, hands, and fingers. The flexibility of the hands always effects the flexibility of the neck. Therefore, hand exercises relieve tensions in the neck. Moreover, spreading the ten fingers creates a reflex that causes the chest vertebrae to spread out.

The hands and fingers also have an additional direct relationship to the heart and lungs. many people can no longer properly stretch their fingers with increasing age. This shows tension in the heart area, which often indicates the prelude to heart disease or a tendency toward osteoporosis. This slightly crooked hand position also impedes inhalation. The result is that the optimum amount of air is not drawn into the lungs, especially into the lung borders, which promotes contamination in those areas.

Reflex Zones

The hand reflex zones correspond to the foot reflex zones, the massage treatment of which is generally known today. Since some of the organs are only found on one side of the body such as the heart and liver, this is reflected in the hands. Since hands come in different sizes, you may not find the exact pressure point immediately. When you have found the desired point, massage it with your thumb, using light pressure and slow, circular movements. One to 3 minutes are enough.

Mudras are sacred ritual gestures or hand positions. When used in religious dance they become an elaborate hand language. The Sanskrit word Mudra means seal. In the most antiquated times mudra was used with mantra and sealed the pattern of energy. The earliest mudra was the Sanskrit symbol. From this primordial system of mudra grew a secret language that became as diverse as the country it was practiced in. Mudra is likewise used for the purpose of prayer.

Mudra is a pattered movement mainly of the fingers that carries an idea or emotion. Mudras are a gesture language capable of expressing ideas and suggesting symbols. Mudras create an energy field and can be used in healing. The ultimate goal of mudra is a higher state of consciousness.

In yoga these sacred hand positions relate to the energy flow of a particular meditation. They enhance the asana (posture) and sound current (mantra). Mudras in yoga are symbolic of mantras and send signals to the glands and to a specific part of the brain depending on the purpose of the meditation or yoga set.

Colors affect the Mudra

Colors influence our minds and our lives on every level. In color therapy, various shades of color are specifically applied to regenerate the organs and glands, as well as to activate the processes of elimination, respiration, and circulation. Colors also influence our moods and every type of mental activity.

  • Red stimulates the circulation, makes us alert, warms and relaxes, but can also bring out aggression;
  • Orange improves the mood, promotes lightness, stimulates sexuality, but can also stimulate superficiality;
  • Yellow stimulates digestion, makes us mentally alert, and lets life appear in a bright light, but it can also be obtrusive;
  • Green is generally calming; it regenerates on every level, and gives us the desire to start something new;
  • Blue is also calming, but this calmness goes deeper and provides a sense of security; it conveys protection, and symbolizes the silent yearning for the incomprehensible;
  • Violet is the color of transformation, change, and spirituality;
  • Brown is the color of stability and connection to the earth, but too much can lead to stagnation;
  • White bears the entire spectrum of the other colors within itself, containing birth as well as death;
  • Black is the color of protection, of gathering strength, of retreat, and of the emptiness that already bears abundance within itself.

There are no “bad” colors. Every color can also be seen in our aura or energy body. When a color gains dominance or is not in its right place, it will initially have an effect on the general feeling of well-being. With time, a health disorder may develop as a result. However, the course of an illness can also be reversed with the help of colors.
You can have some beautiful experiences using color meditations. If you prefer a certain color, it may well be that you need the corresponding qualities. However, if you give too much preference to one color, this can develop into an addiction and the color may harm you. While holding a mudra, you can either visualize a color or concentrate on the color of an object. With visualization the color will then come to life.

How to Practice Mudras

(1) Touching a finger-tip to the thumb-tip increase the element residing in that finger whereas touching a finger-tip to the thumb-base reduces the element residing in that finger. (2) When performing a mudra, a light contact between the thumb and the finger/s is sufficient; firm pressure is not really required. (3) When performing a mudra, the position of other fingers (which are not participating in that mudra) is immaterial. They can be held (effortlessly) straight or allowed to bend as per the practitioner’s desire or (4) Mudras can be practiced anytime, anywhere e.g., while reading a newspaper in the morning, while travelling to the office or back home, while watching T.V. or listening to music, etc. However, simultaneous meditation can, perhaps yield greater benefits. (5) Mudras can be performed in any body-position i.e., lying, sitting, standing, walking, etc. However, simultaneous meditational (6) Even passive performance/ of mudras, using rubber bands or sticking plasters (in cases of unconscious/insane people or children) proves benef.c.al. (7) Only a few mudras (e.g., Aakaash-shaamak and Apaan-vaayu mudras) help within a few minutes of beginning to perform them. Rest of the mudras have to be practiced for about 45 minutes every day (either at one stretch or in three parts, each of 15 minutes), for at least 15 days to experience benefits. In fact they should be practiced till the disease is eradicated, however long it takes. (8) Should a person undergoing Mudra Therapy bring about changes in diet is a question that is frequently asked. We will say that though not indispensable, suitable dieter/ changes can reinforce the benefits of mudras whereas unsuitable diet can, at least partially, offset the good effects of mudras. If a person having an excess of element Vaayu (air) or humor Vaata in his body liberally consumes foods that can increase Vaayu or Vaata, he may not benefit (or may benefit only partially and slowly) even by a most religious and regular practice of suitable (i.e., Vaayu-decreasing or Vaata-decreasing) mudra/s. Quite obviously, no sane person would want his sincere efforts and time spent in performing mudras go in vain because of injudicious diet. In other words, a person’s recovery from disease is expedited by combining Mudra Therapy with correct diet. Suggestions about appropriate diet for the three constitutional types, Vaata, Pitta and Kapha. (9) Mudra Therapy goes along quite well with other forms of treatment, medical as well as nonmedical. Previous medicines should not be stopped when beginning Mudra Therapy.

BASIC MUDRAS

Gyan Mudra

This mudra increases the (Air) Element with in the body.
Method: This Mudra is formed by joining together the tip of the index finger with the tip of the thumb.
Effects : Vaayu-vardhak mudra increases the vaayu (air) element within the body.
Thus reinforced, the air Empowers the mind, causing a positive effect on emotions and leading to enlightenment, empowers the nervous system (including the brain), facilitates movements of electrical impulses along nerves, empowers the pituitary gland and, thereby, the entire system of endocrine glands, empowers muscles, both voluntary and involuntary, empowers the vocal cords and the voice, empowers the heart, increasing its efficiency, renders the skin and the mucous membranes dry, renders the joints and the articular cartilage dry. The element Air is also a component of bodily humor Vaata. The increase of air in the body due to Vaayu-vardhak mudra reinforces the Vaata humor. Therefore, this mudra is an excellent mudra to overcome Vaata-deficiency. However, it should be practiced in moderation by people who already have a Vaata constitution (i.e., an excess of Vaata in their bodies).
Benefits : Vaayu-vardhak mudra can be used to treat the following disorders : Dullness of mind, lack of enthusiasm-initiative-creativity, recklessness, loss of memory, Drowsiness, lethargy, mental retardation, Disorders of the nervous system like cerebral palsy, neuritis, neuropathies, Alzheimer’s disease, Tabes dorsalis, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, Ataxias, Dementias, Syringomyelia, etc., Degeneration of the retina, optic atrophy, Endocrine (hormonal) disorders like hypopituitarism (causing dwarfism, Simmond’s disease, Frohlick’s syndrome), hypothyroidism (causing cretinism, myxoedema), hypoparathyroidism, hypoadrenalism (causing Addison’s disease), diabetes, hypogonadism, etc., Muscular disorders like myopathies, myesthenia gravis, paresis, paralysis (viz paralytic squint, ptosis, facial palsy, vocal paralysis, respiratory paralysis, monoplegia, paraplegia, hemiplegia, quadriplegia, etc.), Lost or feeble voice, Bradycardia (slow heart beats), weakness or gradual failure of the heart, Formation of excessive mucous in respiratory and/or digestive tracts, Effusion in joints. Duration : 30 to 45 minutes every day, either at one stretch or in three parts (i.e for 10 to 15 minutes, thrice a day).
Ideal time : Though Vaayu-vardhak mudra can be performed at any time of the day, practicing it at anytime between 2.00 to 6.00 am/pm gives better results.
Precaution : People with a pronounced Vaata prakruti (constitution) should perform this mudra in moderation, if at all. Given below are some variations of Gyaan mudra, which, apart from yielding the benefits of Gyaan mudra, bestow some additional gains.

Prithvi mudra

This mudra increases the Prithvi (earth) element within the body. At the same time, it decreases the Agni (fire) element. Therefore, it can also be called Agni-shaamak mudra.
Method:This mudra is formed by joining together the tips of the ring finger and the thumb.
Effects : Prithvi-vardhak mudra increases the Prithvi (earth) element within the body but decreases the Agni (fire) element within the body. The element earth is a vital component of bodily tissues like bones, cartilage, skin, hair, nails, flesh, muscles, tendons, internal organs, etc. Practice of Prithvi-vardhak mudra builds and invigorates these tissues. In other words, this mudra increases vitality, strength and endurance. The element earth is also associated with the nose (smell). Therefore, Prithvi-vardhak mudra can be used to overcome nasal disorders (e.g., loss of sense of smell). The element earth is also a component of the bodily humor kapha. Practice of Prithvi-vardhak mudra increases the kapha humor within the body. Therefore, this mudra can be used to overcome disorders caused by kapha deficiency. However, it should be practiced in moderation by people who already have an excess of kapha in their bodies. The element Agni (fire) is concerned with body-temperature and metabolism. Since Prithvi-vardhak (= Agni-shaamak) mudra reduces fire, it can be used to pacify an overactive Agni and overcome disorders of Agni-excess like emaciation, fever, inflammation, etc. The element fire is also a component of bodily humor Pitta. Therefore, Prithvi-vardhak (= Agni-shaamak) mudra is an excellent mudra for people with a pronounced Pitta constitution. They can regularly use this mudra even to avoid illness.
Benefits: Prithvi-vardhak mudra can be used to treat the following disorders: (1 ) Chronic fatigue, general debility, convalescence, (2 ) Lack of stamina or endurance, THERAPEUTIC MUDRAS ( 3 ) Inexplicable weight-loss, emaciation, (4) Osteoporosis osteomalacia (diminished bone-density), rickets, ( 5 ) Fracture (to expedite union), (6) Degeneration of articular cartilage (Osteo-Arthritis), ( 7 ) Weak, atrophied muscles, myopathies, (8) Paresis, paralysis, poliomyelitis, ( 9 ) Dry, cracked, burning, mature skin, (10)     Skin-rashes, urticaria, (11)     Brittle nails, (12)     Hair-loss, premature greying of hair, (13)    Burning in eyes, stomach (acidity), urine, anus, hands, feet, head, (14)     Aphthous ulcers in the mouth, (15)     Ulcers in the stomach, intestines, (16)    Inflammatory diseases (diseases whose names end with ‘itis’), (1 7) Jaundice, (18)     Fever, (19)     Hyperthyroidism.
Duration : 30 to 45 minutes every day, either at one stretch or in 3 parts (i.e., for 10 to 15 minutes, thrice a day). However, people with kapha deficiency can do it even for longer periods.
Ideal time : Though Prithvi-vardhak mudra can be performed at anytime of the day, practicing it at anytime between 6.00 to 10.00 am/pm gives better results.

Jal-vardhak or Varun mudra, Mudra of the Water
Method :This mudra is formed by joining together the tips of the thumb and the little finger.
Effects : Jal-vardhak (Varun) mudra increases the Jal (water) element within the body.Almost seventy per cent of the body is water. Thus, water is the most abundant element in the body, being present in the protoplasm of cells, extra-cellular fluid, lymph, blood, tears, saliva, mucous, digestive juices, enzymes, hormones, semen, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), etc. A deficiency of water in the body would result in dehydration of tissues. Performance of Jal-vardhak mudra increases the water-content of the body by suitably affecting the water-metabolism. Thus, it helps to rehydrate cells, tissues, muscles, skin, joint-cartilage, etc. The element water is also associated with tongue and taste. Therefore, this mudra can be used to overcome disorders like loss of taste-sense, dryness of mouth, etc. Water is also a component of two bodily humors: Pitta and Kapha. Practice of Jal-vardhak mudra increases these humors. People with a pronounced Pitta + Kapha constitution should perform this mudra in moderation. On the other hand, people with a Vaata constitution (dosha) can derive immense benefits from the practice of this mudra.
Benefits: Jal-vardhak (Varun) mudra can be used to overcome the following disorders:  (1) Dryness of eyes  (2) Dryness of the digestive tract (mouth, throat and intestines) (3) Indigestion (4) Constipation  (5) Dryness of the skin leading to cracks, dry eczema, psoriasis, etc. (6) Degeneration of joint-cartilage, Osteo-Arthritis (7) Anemia (8) Cramps, dehydration (9) Deficiency of hormones, (10) Scanty urination (oliguria) (11) Scanty semen (oligospermia) (12) Scanty menses (oligomenorrhoea), (13) Loss of taste sensation, tongue-disorders (14) Disorders of Vaata-excess (see Vaayu-shaamak mudra)
Duration: 45 minutes every day, either at one stretch or in 3 parts (i.e., for 15 minutes, thrice a day). Precaution : People having water-retention in their bodies or people with a Pitta + Kapha constitution should perform this mudra moderately, if at all.

Vayu Mudra or Vaayu-shaamak, Mudra of the Air

This mudra decreases the vaayu (air) element within the body.
Method:This mudra is formed by first placing the tip of the index finger on the base of the thumb and then bringing gentle pressure of the thumb upon this finger. This amounts to suppression of element air (residing in the first finger) by element fire (residing in the thumb).
Effects : Vaayu-shaamak mudra decreases the air element within the body. This reduction of air Sedates restless and anxious mind, Calms overcharged nervous system, Pacifies overactive endocrine glands, Relaxes tense or spastic muscles, Soothes strained voice,  Allows rehydration of skin and articular cartilage. The element air is also a component of bodily humor Vaata. The decrease of air in the body due to Vaayu-shaamak mudra pacifies the (aggravated) Vaata. Therefore, this mudra is especially suitable for people of Vaata constitution (Vaata dosha). They can regularly use this mudra even to avoid illness.
Benefits: Vaayu-shaamak mudra can be used to treat the following disorders : Stress, anxiety, irritability, lack of concentration, timidity, indecisiveness, impatience, restlessness, Sleeplessness, epileptic fits (convulsions), giddiness, Parkinson’s disease, chorea, tremors, sciatica, trigeminal neuralgia, intercostal neuralgia, etc. Twitching of eye-lids, nystagmus (constant involuntary eye-movements), Tinnitus (noises in the ear/s), vertigo, dizziness, Hormonal imbalances caused by over activity of endocrine glands, Breathlessness, tachycardia (fast heart beats), palpitations, Hiccups, Muscle-spasm, muscle-cramps, muscular rigidity, Crackling joints (Osteo-Arthritis), gout,  Dry, rough skin/hair, brittle nails, Constipation, flatulence (gas formation).
Duration : 30 to45 minutes every day either at one stretch or in 3 parts (i.e., for 10 to 15 minutes, thrice a day). Ideal time: Though Vaayu-shaamak mudra can be done at any time of the day, practising it anytime other than 2.00 to 6.00 am/pm gives better results.
Precaution : Many experienced doctors say that the practice of this mudra should be discontinued as soon as the disease has been overcome.

Aakaash-shaamak or Shoonya mudra

This mudra decreases the Aakaash (space) element within the body.
Method:This mudra is formed by first placing the tip of the middle finger on the base of the thumb and then bringing gentle pressure of the thumb upon this finger. This amounts to suppression of element space (residing in the middle finger) by element fire (residing in the thumb).
Effects : Aakaash-shaamak mudra decreases the Aakaash (space) element within the body. It can, therefore, be used to treat disorders (enlisted below) caused by an abnormal increase of space within the body. The element space is associated with ears. Therefore, Aakaash shaamak mudra helps certain ear disorders. In fact, it is an almost failproof remedy for ear-pain. The decreased internal space restricts the rest of the four bodily elements i.e., vaayu (air), agni (fire), jal (water) and prithvi (earth). Therefore, Aakaash-shaamak mudra can be beneficially combined with Vaayu-shaamak, Agni-shaamak, Prithvi-shaamak and Jal-shaamak mudras. The element Aakaash is also a component of bodily humor Vaata. The decrease of space in the body from the practice of Aakaash-shaamak mudra pacifies the (aggravated) Vaata. Therefore, this mudra is especially suitable for people having a pronounced Vaata constitution (Vaata dosha).
Benefits : Aakaash-shaamak mudra can be used to treat the following disorders : ( 1 ) Feeling of emptiness or numbness in the body or body-parts like the head, the chest, the abdomen, etc., (2) Ear ailments like pain, tinnitus (noises), vertigo and acquired deafness.
Duration : In case of acute ear-pain, incapacitating vertigo or severe numbness, perform this mudra continuously till the disorder subsides. For chronic ear-ailments or numbness peform this mudra for 30 to 45 minutes either at one stretch or in 3 parts (i.e., for 10 to 15 minutes, thrice a day).
Ideal time : For chronic diseases, this mudra should, if possible, be performed at anytime other than 2.00 to 6.00 am/pm gives better results.
Precaution : Experienced doctors believe that the practice of this mudra should be discontinued as soon as the disease has been overcome.

Prithvi-shaamak or Surya mudra

This mudra increases the Agni (fire) element within the body. It can, therefore, be called Agni-vardhak mudra, too. At the same time, this mudra decreases the Prithvi (earth) element within the body.
Method:This mudra is formed by first placing the tip of the ring finger on the base of the thumb and then bringing gentle pressure of the thumb upon this finger. This amounts to suppression of element earth (residing in the ring finger) by element fire (residing in the thumb). The earth element thus suppressed, fire is able to rage unopposed
Effects : Prithvi-shaamak or Agni-vardhak mudra increases the Agni (fire) element within the body but subdues the Prithvi (earth) element. The element Agni (fire) is associated with body-temperature and metabolism. Practice of Prithvi-shaamak or Surya mudra helps to maintain the body-temperature and keeps the metabolism going. The element Agni is also connected with vision. Hence, regular practice of Surya mudra helps to strengthen weak eyes and improve vision. Agni is also a component of bodily humor Pitta. Practice of Prithvi-shaamak or Surya mudra increases the Pitta humor within the body. Therefore, this mudra can be used to overcome disorders caused by Pitta deficiency. However, it should be used only in moderation by people having an excess of Pitta. Prithvi-shaamak mudra decreases the element Prithvi (earth) within the body. It is, therefore, excellent for people having an excess of element Prithvi in their bodies. The element earth is also a component of bodily humor kapha. Therefore, Prithvi-shaamak mudra is an excellent mudra for people with a pronounced kapha constitution. They can regularly practise this mudra even to prevent illness.
Benefits: Prithvi-shaamak (Agni-vardhak; Surya) mudra can be used to treat the following disorders : 1. Abnormally low body-temperature, 2. Coldness of skin, body, limbs, hands, feet, etc., 3. Intolerance to cold, shivering, 4. Underactivity of the thyroid gland causing slow metabolism, 5 . Obesity, progressive weight-gain, 6. Loss of appetite, indigestion, constipation, 7. Absence of sweating, 8. Certain vision/eye problems, especially cataract.
Duration :30 to 45 minutes every day either at one stretch or in 3 parts (i.e., for 10 to 15 minutes, thrice a day).  Ideal time : Though this mudra can be performed any time, practicing it at anytime from 10 am to 2 pm or 10 pm to 2 am gives better results.
Precaution : Over-performance of this mudra may cause undue heating of the body.

Apaan mudra, Mudra of the Heart

The Apaan mudra is an extremely important and useful mudra that first detoxifies (and, therefore, purifies) the body and then energizes it.
Method : Apaan mudra is formed by joining together the tips of the thumb, the middle finger and the ring finger.
Effects: Apaan mudra is a combination of the Aakaash-vardhak (Aakaash) and the Prithvi-vardhak (Prithvi) mudras. Apart from an increase of elements space and earth, Apaan mudra brings about an increase of Vaata and Kapha humors and, therefore, a decrease of Pitta humor.
Benefits : The Apaan mudra can be used to overcome the following disorders : 1. Anuria (absence/obstruction of urine), 2. Constipation, flatulence (gas), piles, 3. Absence of sweat, 4. Delayed delivery of a child, 5. Burning in the body/body-parts, 6. Ailments caused by a deficiency of element space and humor Vaata, 7. Benefits: This mudra meditation will bring the knowledge of all the past present and future teachers to you. It is an opportunity to experience mudra, mantra and breath as a meditation.
Prayer mudra neutralizes the positive (right or male) and negative (left or female side of the body. It stimulates the mind nerve, which is the only nerve that comes out of the mind.
Prayer or Namaste Mudra is often used when blessing food, beginning prayer or tuning in before doing a yoga or meditation. It is the mudra to neutralize the nadis (subtle energy channels that link the charkas including Sushumna, Ida and Pingala Nadis).

Tranquility Mudra
Method: Buddha gave it his disciples for control of the mind. Sit in easy Pose with a straight spine and with the elbows bent, bring the hands up and in until they meet in front of the body at the level of the heart.  The elbows should be held up almost to the level of the hands. Bend the index fingers of each hand in towards the palm. Join them with each other so they press together along the second joint. The middle fingers are extended and meet at the fingertips. The other fingers are curled into the hand. The thumbs meet at the fingertips. Note that the extended fingers point away from the body.
Hold the mudra about 4 in. from the body with the extended fingers pointing away from the body.
– Focus on the tip of your Nose.
– Inhale completely and hold the breath
– Repeat the mantra of your choice 11 to 21 times.
– Exhale hold the breath out.
– Repeat the mantra an equal number of times
– Practice for three minutes

Hakini Mudra
Place all the fingertips together. The Hakim Mudra can be practiced at any time. When you would like to remember something, or want to find the red thread again, place your fingertips together, direct your eyes upward, place the tip of your tongue on your gums while inhaling, and let the tongue fall again while exhaling. Then take a deep breath-and what you wanted should immediately occur to you. Moreover, when you must concentrate on something for a longer period of time, could use some good ideas, or want to remember something that you have read, this mudra can be useful. When doing mental work, don’t cross your feet. Sit with your eyes facing west. This mudra can do true wonders, and you should always keep it in the back of your mind in case of an emergency.

This finger position has been researched quite well; it has been determined that it promotes the cooperation between the right and left brain hemispheres. It is also recommended today in memory training. It opens access to the right hemisphere, which is where the memory is stored. This mudra also improves and deepens respiration, and the brain profits from it as well.

To activate the energy of the large intestine, shift the finger contact
by one finger so that the right index finger is on the left thumb,
your right middle finger is on your left index finger, etc.

Ganesha Mudra
Ganesha, the deity who overcomes all obstacles.

Hold your left hand in front of your chest with the palm facing outward. Bend the fingers. Now grasp the left hand with the right hand, which has its back facing outward. Move the hands to the level of the heart, right in front of the chest. While exhaling, vigorously pull the hands apart without releasing the grip. This will tense the muscles of the upper arms and chest area. While inhaling, let go of all the tension. Repeat 6 times and then lovingly place both hands on the sternum in this position. Focus on the feeling in this part of your body. Then change the hand position: your right palm now faces outward. Repeat the exercise 6 times in this position. Afterward, remain in silence for a while. Once a day is enough..

Visualize the color red, a mosaic, a mandala, in various tones of red. Focus all of your senses on it for a while. Red should strengthen, warm, and widen your heart, giving you the courage to be open and confident.

Dhyana  or Samahita (Meditation) Mudra

The Dhyana mudra may be made with one or both hands. When made with a single hand the left one is placed in the lap, while the right may be engaged elsewhere. The left hand making the Dhyana mudra in such cases symbolizes the female left-hand principle of wisdom. Ritual objects such as a text, or more commonly an alms bowl symbolizing renunciation, may be placed in the open palm of this left hand.

When made with both hands, the hands are generally held at the level of the stomach or on the thighs. The right hand is placed above the left, with the palms facing upwards, and the fingers extended. In some cases the thumbs of the two hands may touch at the tips, thus forming a mystic triangle. The esoteric sects obviously attribute to this triangle a multitude of meanings, the most important being the identification with the mystic fire that consumes all impurities. This triangle is also said to represent the Three Jewels of Buddhism, mentioned above, namely the Buddha himself, the Good Law and the Sangha.

The Dhyana mudra is the mudra of meditation, of concentration on the Good law, and of the attainment of spiritual perfection. According to tradition, this mudra derives from the one assumed by the Buddha when meditating under the pipal tree before his Enlightenment. This gesture was also adopted since time immemorial, by yogis during their meditation and concentration exercises. It indicates the perfect balance of thought, rest of the senses, and tranquility.

This mudra is displayed by the fourth Dhyani Buddha Amitabha, also known as Amitayus. By meditating on him, the delusion of attachment becomes the wisdom of discernment. The Dhyana mudra helps mortals achieve this transformation.
